Supermarket retailer Lidl has has reported that it has made additional investments into its store-based public charging network in the UK totalling more than  £10 million over the course of this financial year.

The investment programme includes the the installation of around 100 new rapid EV chargers at Lidl stores, alongside a commitment to building rapid chargers at the majority of its newly built stores. It brings total investment in the network to £35 million since 2017, with rapid charging now available at one third of Lidl stores in the UK.

Unlike many UK supermarket chains, which operate EV charging facilities through partnerships with third-party providers, Lidl transitioned away from working with Pod Point in July 2024, and now owns its charging points outright, giving it direct control over pricing and special offers.

The investment comes as demand for public charging in the UK continues to climb. The UK’s most recent car registration figures, showed that 30% of new cars registered were fully electric.

Richard Taylor, Chief Real Estate Officer at Lidl GB, commented:

“For over 30 years, we’ve focused on giving customers the best possible value on their groceries, and our EV network is an extension of that promise. By expanding our rapid chargers, we’re making it as simple and affordable as possible for shoppers to top up while they shop – helping EV drivers save money and supporting more sustainable everyday habits.”
