Electric vehicle (EV) charge point operator (CPO) Believ is continuing its partnership with Luton Council to further expand EV charging across council-owned residential car parks. The initiative aims to support residents without off-street parking in making the switch to EVs.

Ten Standard Plus chargers have now been installed and are ready to use, with the option to expand the network further as demand grows.

The chargers are PAS 1899 compliant, which is the EV charging specification which provides guidance to support the building of accessible EV charging infrastructure in the UK. Chargers will be installed in the carriageway with hatching at ground level for ease of use.

Believ is fully funding the project and will manage all aspects of planning, installation, operation, and ongoing maintenance. The partnership supports Luton Council’s wider sustainability strategy, which targets net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Key goals include expanding residential EV charging hubs, transitioning the council fleet and public transport to electric vehicles, and achieving a 100% low-carbon airport fleet by 2030.

All of Believ's chargers are accessible directly in the Zapmap app where payment can be made, and live status and availability are shared 24 hours a day. Believ chargers are also compatible with the Zapmap charging card.

Guy Bartlett, Believ CEO, says it’s vital these residents are not left behind in the transition to EVs:

“By expanding the network, we’re helping more residents make the switch. It will also help reduce road transport emissions and support cleaner air for all across the community.”

Cllr Adrees Latif, portfolio holder for Sustainable Development and Highways, said:

“Access to convenient EV charging is an important part of supporting residents who want to make the switch to an electric vehicle, but who may not have their own driveway or off-street parking.

“These new charge points are the first we have installed specifically to support residents living in council housing, helping to make EV charging more accessible in locations where it is needed.

“This is part of our wider work to improve EV charging provision across Luton and support residents in making more sustainable travel choices. We will continue to look at opportunities to expand the charging network and make it easier for more people to make the transition to electric vehicles.”
