Electric vehicle (EV) charge point operator (CPO) Believ has taken over operation of more than 110 public chargers across over 30 locations throughout Brighton and Hove, upgrading technology where required.

The transition sees Believ taking over Standard and Standard Plus chargers, as well as Rapid chargers, which were previously operated by Blink Charging. The charging speeds offer both long-stay and on-the-go top ups, helping support residents, visitors and local businesses in making the switch to EVs.

Believ is also working with Brighton and Hove to install a further 210 Rapid and Ultra-rapid chargers, with deployment underway and due to be completed by the end of 2028.

In Brighton and Hove, 54% of residents do not have access to off-street parking and a means to charge their vehicles privately, so public charging is particularly important for drivers in the area. With charging locations including Elm Grove, London Road Car Park and King Alfred Car Park, Believ aims to make charging more convenient for Brighton's residents and visitors.

The project combines the migration of existing charging infrastructure with upgrades designed to improve reliability and make better use of public space. Believ has retained the existing Standard and Standard Plus charging equipment, preserving installed cabling and infrastructure.

The Rapid charging locations are undergoing equipment replacements to meet public charging regulations and support improved reliability. The new Rapid charge points will also provide more chargers with less infrastructure, and this work is expected to be completed by the end of November 2026.

All of Believ's chargers can be found in the Zapmap app, where live status and availability information is shared 24 hours a day. Charging sessions can be started and paid for directly in the app, or with a tap of the Zapmap charging card.

Guy Bartlett, CEO at Believ, says Brighton and Hove is an important region for public EV charging:

“With more than half of all households without access to off-street parking, public charging is vital to the region’s transition to EVs and delivering clean air for all.

“By retaining equipment where possible, upgrading rapid charging locations and working closely with the local authority, we’re taking a practical approach to delivering a reliable network for Brighton. Events like the BYD launch are also a great opportunity to connect with drivers, hear where they want to see more charging and help make the move to EVs accessible for all.”
