To accelerate Wales’ transition to electric vehicles, the Welsh Government is introducing 100% non-domestic rates relief for EV charging bays and forecourts through March 2036. The decade-long tax break is designed to encourage operator investment and expand infrastructure in poorly served regions.
As of July 2026, Wales ranks 9th in the UK for public EV infrastructure with 6,066 chargers. Greater London leads the country with 31,635 chargers, followed by the South East with 16,476 and Scotland with 13,015.
All of the 6,066 Welsh chargers can be found by using the Zapmap app, where live availability and status is shared for most, making planning for charging stops simple.
Elin Jones, Wales’ Cabinet Minister for Finance, said,
“The switch to electric vehicles is a huge opportunity to cut emissions – but that transition will only work if people can rely on the infrastructure to support it.
“This relief removes a potential barrier to investment in Wales, giving operators the certainty they need to keep expanding infrastructure, without the risk of unexpected rates bills. Providing this support for a full decade sends a clear signal that Wales is serious about building a charging network we can all depend on.”
