Based primarily in the North of England, including Lancaster and Cumbria, the society operates as a social enterprise that reinvests profits into expanding its network. By installing charge points in accessible community locations such as public car parks, the society aims to ensure every resident is within a five-minute walk of a charger.
The society made national headlines in 2026 for a landmark legal victory against HMRC regarding the VAT treatment of public EV charging. A London tax tribunal ruled in favour of Charge My Street, finding that electricity supplied at its public charging stations should qualify for the reduced 5% VAT rate rather than the standard 20% rate.
